ＢＥＣＣ設立１０周年記念インタビュー

ＢＥＣＣ（Bunkyo English Communication Center）は、６月に設立１０周年を迎えました。
これを記念してＢＥＣＣディレクターのArthur Rutson-Griffiths先生（アーサー　ラットソングリフィス先生）に
「英語を学ぶ意義」や「本学のＢＥＣＣでの英語の学び方」についてお聞きしました。

1. How important is it for students to learn English today?

It’s more important than ever. With English being taught to students from 3rd grade onwards from 2020, students in the Education department have to be ready to speak English and teach English in English. If Global Communication students want to work in a modern, global workplace, they need English. With increasing numbers of foreign residents in Japan, students in the Welfare, Psychology and Nutrition departments could need to communicate with parents in English if they work in childcare.

2. What about students who might not need English in their future careers?

Learning a language can be fun! We have many students who enjoy learning English for the challenge. It’s also good for your brain: it can help improve your memory, your ability to handle stress and can help you learn something new about your native language.

There are also lots of opportunities to use English outside the classroom with the increasing numbers of international tourists to Japan, especially with the Rugby World Cup and Olympics being held in Japan in the next couple of years. It’s a great feeling if you can meet someone new or help them out.

3. How can the BECC help Bunkyo students to learn English?

We believe in the BECC on focusing on what students can do, not what they can’t. Our classes emphasize using English to achieve everyday tasks. We use the Common European Framework of Reference and streaming to make sure our classes are at the right level for all students. We also try to help students learn other skills, such as how to use ICT effectively, presentation skills and intercultural communication.

4. How about outside class?

We believe in developing students as independent learners, so we encourage students to use the Self- Access Learning Centre and find the right materials and methods for them to improve their English. Our two full-time Learning Advisors can help students make their own learning plans. Teachers are also regularly available in the SALC Lounge, so students have the chance to practice their English and ‘study abroad’ every single day for free!

We put on a number of events throughout the year to give students the chance to use their English or learn something new, such as learning about a BECC teacher’s country or study abroad experience. We also held our 10th birthday party last month.

5. What are you looking forward to in the BECC’s next 10 years?

From next year, we’ll be able to offer our services to more groups. We’re looking forward to meeting new students and helping them to find a way of learning English that suits their needs. Past, current and future students are always welcome at the BECC – it’s never too late to start improving your English, so we look forward to seeing everyone soon.

1. 学生にとって、今、英語を学ぶということがどのくらい重要なのでしょうか？

これまで以上に重要となってきています。２０２０年度から小学校３年生から学校で英語を教わるようになるため、教育学科の学生は英語を話せるように準備しておく必要があるのと同時に英語を英語で教えることができるようにしておく必要があります。グローバルコミュニケーション学科の学生が現代的なグローバルな職場で働きたいと考えているなら、英語は必須となります。日本で暮らす外国人が増えつつあるなかで、人間福祉学科や心理学科、そして人間栄養学科の学生は、例えば子どもと関わる職場で働くときにはその保護者達と英語でコミュニケーションをとらなくてはならない場合もあるでしょう。

2. 将来のキャリアで英語が必要でないかもしれない学生についてはいかがでしょうか？

言語を学ぶことは楽しいです！　本学では、たくさんの学生が自分へのチャレンジとして英語を学んでいます。脳にもいいんですよ。記憶力やストレスへの対応力が向上し、自分の母語についての新たな発見もあります。

さらに日本を訪れる世界中からの旅行客の増加、特に今後数年間ではラグビーワールドカップやオリンピックの日本での開催も決まっていて、教室の外でも英語を使う機会はたくさんあります。新しい誰かと出会うことや彼らの手助けができたら、とても嬉しいですよね。

3. ＢＥＣＣの英語教育の特色は？

ＢＥＣＣでは学生が「できないこと」ではなく「できること」に焦点をおくという信念があります。私たちの授業では、日常のさまざまな事柄を英語で行えるようになるということに重点を置いています。また、私たちはＣＥＦＲ (the Common European Framework of Reference)*1を使用し、全ての学生にとって適切なレベルで授業を行えるよう習熟度別に授業を行っています。また、ＩCＴの効果的な使い方やプレゼンテーション能力、さらに異文化コミュニケーションなど、英語以外のスキルも身につけられるように考慮しています。

4. 授業外ではどのような学び方ができますか？

自律した学修者として成長できるように、学生にはＳＡＬＣ（Self-Access Learning Center）*2 を利用し英語力向上のために自分に合った教材や学習方法を見つけることを勧めています。２名のラーニングアドバイザーが常駐していて、学生各々が自分の学修計画を立てられるよう手助けをしています。さらに、いつもＢＥＣＣ教員がＳＡＬＣラウンジにいて学生が教員と英語で話す機会を持てたり、無料で毎日「海外留学」を経験したりすることができます。

また、学生が英語を使う機会を持てたり何か新しいことを学んだりできるように、ＢＥＣＣ教員の出身国や海外留学経験について知ることができるようなイベントを年間を通して開催しています。先月にはＢＥＣＣの１０周年を祝うパーティーも開催しました。

5. ＢＥＣＣの次の１０年に何を期待していますか？

来年度から私たちはもっと幅広い学生に教育支援をすることができます。新しい学生と会えることを楽しみにしていますし、彼らのニーズに合った英語の学び方を一緒に見つけていけることも楽しみにしています。今までもそしてこれからも、ＢＥＣＣはいつでも学生を歓迎しています。英語力の向上に取り組むのに遅すぎるということはありません。皆さんとお会いできることを楽しみにしています。
